Register your residence
After moving in, register your new residence with the responsible registration office.
Registration and deregistration are separate tasks when changing homes: register the new accommodation and deregister the residence you give up. Minors moving with you must also be included in the registration.
What to prepare
- Prepare the Meldezettel registration form for an in-person or postal application; have an active ID Austria ready for the digital route.
- Collect the details of everyone moving with you and check in advance which registration route fits your situation.
Step by step
- Find the responsible office: the municipal office (Gemeindeamt), municipal administration (Magistrat) or, in Vienna, the Municipal District Office.
- Complete the registration within 3 days after moving in.
- For the digital route, use the documented online service with ID Austria.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Do not assume that residence registration automatically informs your employer, bank, insurer or other organisations.
- Do not confuse an ordinary move with changing a main residence to a secondary residence or vice versa: these are different procedures with different deadlines.
